Should you Rent a Moving Container?

by Dick Stoner 06/16/2019

If you are planning for a move, hiring a truck is one of the first things that comes to mind. However, trucks are not the only means to transport your belongings. Have you ever heard of a Moving Container? A Moving container is a portable and durable storage unit that you can use to carry your stuff to your new home if it is located in another city or across the country.

When it comes to moving containers, one company that unarguably holds the position as the founder is PODS, but other companies have joined the field as well such as U-Haul and Mayflower. Renting a moving container from these companies is a cost-efficient and safe way to move your belongings to your home. However, if it is your first time, here are some specific things you need to know before renting a moving container.

How does it work?

Hiring a moving container is straightforward. The first thing that you will want to do is choose whether you want to store, move or do both with your stuff. After that, you will have to decide whether the container at the company's storage center or your location.

What is the cost?

For moving the cost depends on the size, distance, and duration of the container. In terms of storage, you will have the option to store the container on your lawn or at their storage location. However, the cost depends on the duration and the size of the container used.

What are their container sizes?

Containers have several sizes such as the 7-foot container, 12-foot container, and 16-foot container.

What happens if the unit gets damaged on your property?

If the container gets damaged while parked at your home, in most cases you will be responsible to foot the bill for the repair.

What happens if a storage container sits on my driveway for a long time?

When a container remains at your home for an extended period, obviously you will pay more. Apart from that, pests such as ants and other insects might invade the storage container if not closed tightly.

Will the container affect the grass on my lawn?

Yes, parking a container on your lawn for an extended period will deprive it of sunlight thus damaging your landscaping.

Renting a moving container is a great idea when moving cross country; however, a moving container is a two-sided coin so before you rent one, make sure you need it.
